What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a component of the health care system of China that can be traced back at least 2,500 years. The ancient Chinese believed that there is a universal life energy called Chi (or Qi) present in every living creature. This energy is said to circulate throughout the body along specific pathways that are called meridians. As long as this energy flows freely throughout the meridians, health is maintained; however, if the flow of energy is blocked, the system is disrupted and pain and illness occur. Acupuncture is theorized to correct imbalances of flow at identifiable points close to the skin.

The practice of acupuncture to treat identifiable pathophysiological (disease) conditions in American medicine was rare until the visit of President Richard M. Nixon to China in 1972. Since that time, there has been an explosion of interest in the United States and Europe in the application of the technique of acupuncture to Western medicine.

Approach To Treatment

Acupuncture involves stimulation of anatomical locations on or in the skin by a variety of techniques. There are a variety of approaches to diagnosis and treatment in American acupuncture that incorporate medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries. The most thoroughly studied mechanism of stimulation employs penetration of the skin by thin, solid, metallic needles, which are manipulated manually or electrically. This procedure re-programs and restores normal functions by stimulating certain points along the meridians, subsequently freeing Chi energy.

What to Expect with Treatment

Your first visit is approximately 45 minutes, which includes treatment plus an initial exam and questions about your current state of health. Subsequent visits are usually about 30 minutes, with treatment lasting 20-30 minutes. The number of treatments required ranges from one to several, depending on the severity and chronicity of the complaint. Chronic problems usually require five to ten weekly or biweekly sessions.

Most patients find acupuncture very calming and relaxing. There are generally no side effects, although occasionally acute muscle or joint pain may feel temporarily worse before it gets better. Many commonly used acupuncture points are located on the lower arms and legs, so it is recommended to wear loose clothing that allows easy access to those areas.
