Laser Therapy

What is Laser Therapy?

The word ‘laser’ is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Therapeutic lasers (also referred to as cold lasers) accelerate tissue healing by injecting billions of photons of visible and/or invisible laser light deep into tissue structures. Body tissues contain structures which absorb laser light energy. This energy is converted into chemical energy and used in the tissue to significantly accelerate the healing process and reduce pain in the body naturally. Laser light also increases microcirculation leading to better tissue delivery of oxygen and nutrition, which also accelerates tissue healing.

At Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic, laser therapy, also referred to as cold laser therapy, is a type of modality of treatment available to patients seeking chiropractic care. The beneficial effects of laser therapy are cumulative over the course of a series of treatments. In contrast to other therapies, laser therapy actually works by accelerating tissue repair rather than simply affecting symptoms such as pain. There are many laser products on the market and we have chosen TheraLase®, as we feel it is the best product licensed in Canada. Product and company information is available at www.theralase.com. Information on laser research is available at www.laser.nu.

How Many Treatments are Required?

This varies from patient to patient. Just as every medical condition is individual, so are the responses to therapy. The onset of initial pain relief as a result of treatment varies due to each patient's particular rate of release of endorphins and other chemicals involved in tissue repair. In a recent clinical report on 151 consecutive cases using laser therapy, 11 treatments was the average number required for maximum improvement. As a guideline, acute conditions require four to six treatments, and chronic conditions require 12 to 24 treatments.

What About the Deleterious Effects of Radiation?

Laser therapy does produce radiation, as photon energy, in the visible and near infra-red regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Worldwide research over the past 30 years has failed to record any negative effects from this process.
