Naturopathic Medicine

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of health care that searches for and addresses the root cause of illness, and promotes health and healing using a wide range of natural therapies.

By evaluating the health of the mind and body systems, naturopathic medicine looks to uncover the underlying causes that connect many different symptoms. This approach goes beyond simply treating symptoms. Naturopathic doctors are interested in not only helping patients achieve better health today, but also helping prevent future conditions and illnesses. Examples of common conditions treated by naturopathic medicine include: allergies, eczema, hypertension, headaches, menstrual disorders, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depression, digestive system disorders, high cholesterol, colds, and arthritis. Treatment can include: nutrition counseling and supplementation; herbal medicine; acupuncture; and homeopathic medicine.

Approach to Treatment

A naturopathic doctor (N.D.) considers a range of natural methods to restore you to a well-functioning state of health. Naturopathic medicine treats the patient as a whole person, not just a collection of symptoms, and recognizes that seemingly unrelated symptoms may be connected and are part of a larger underlying process. ND’s are primarily concerned with the “why” of a disease rather than the “what”. This approach goes beyond simply treating symptoms, and provides patients with the tools they need to achieve optimal health.

What Training do Naturopathic Doctors Receive?

To be licensed, a naturopathic doctor, also referred to as a naturopath, requires a minimum of three years of pre-medical studies at university, followed by four years at a recognized naturopathic college. The education encompasses standard medical curriculum (i.e. Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physical Examination, Clinical and Laboratory Diagnosis, Imaging studies) as well as naturopathic therapies. ND’s are primary health care providers who integrate medical diagnostics with natural therapies. They work in partnership with other regulated health care providers to ensure that patients receive the most comprehensive and effective care possible. They are the only regulated health professionals in the field of natural medicine in Ontario.

What Treatments or Therapies are Used in Naturopathic Medicine?

The main treatments or therapies used are clinical nutrition, homeopathy, botanical medicine and gemmotherapy, acupuncture, and lifestyle counseling.

Clinical Nutrition

Good nutrition is critical for health. Because your body is literally made of the food you put in your mouth, it is impossible to be healthy without addressing diet. A core foundation of naturopathic medicine is reviewing diet and recommending changes as required.

Homeopathy

Based on the principle of ‘like cures like’, Homeopathic Medicine was developed in the 1700s, and remains very popular in India, France, and Germany. Minute amounts of natural substances are used to stimulate the body’s self-healing abilities.

Botanical Medicine/Gemmotherapy

Herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years. Today, 80% of the world's population uses plants to treat illness or alleviate symptoms. Herbal alternatives are gaining popularity for several reasons:

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is over 5000 years old. It is based on the belief that living beings have a vital energy called "Qi" that circulates through twelve energy lines known as meridians on the body. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system. An imbalance in the flow of Qi throughout a meridian is how disease begins. Fine needles are inserted just below the skin into specified points along meridian lines to restore balance to the flow of Qi. There are over 1,000 acupuncture points on the body.

For thousands of years, the Chinese have used acupuncture as one of their main therapies. The primary principal is to balance the flow of Qi (energy) through specific channels in the body.

Lifestyle Counseling

Stress, overwork, insufficient sleep, inactivity, and emotional state all have an enormous impact on our physical health. Naturopathic doctors encourage patients to make positive changes in their lives to help them achieve their health goals.
