Identifying Injuries

Whether a weekend warrior or elite level athlete, most individuals know when they are injured. Symptoms often include pain; an inability to move normally; or decreased function of muscles or joints, and are usually very easy to recognize. However, knowing and understanding why symptoms occur is more complex. A chiropractor is trained to examine, diagnose, and treat root causes of symptoms. At the clinic, a combination of clinical examinations, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, and other diagnostic interventions are used to determine the problem and to assess if chiropractic care is appropriate.

Sports Injury Treatment

Injuries to the soft tissues, nerves, and joints related to sport are treated with three goals in mind:

  1. Accelerate healing
  2. Promote as complete a healing of the area as possible (restore full strength, range of motion, and stability)
  3. Identify and address any potential risks for re-injury.

Treatment modalities such as chiropractic care (joint mobilization/manipulation, soft tissue therapy); electrical therapy modalities; laser therapy; custom foot orthotics; exercise progression; massage therapy and acupuncture are used to accelerate healing and restore normal tissue mobility and alignment. Guided exercise prescription will help restore mobility, strength and proprioception (awareness of position in space or balance). Assessment of whole body mechanics is done to identify areas of weakness, muscle imbalance, decreased mobility, or abnormal alignment that may predispose the athlete to injury.

Injury Prevention and Performance Improvement

The chiropractic approach to healthcare fits well with sports injury prevention and performance improvement. Chiropractors focus on function. A chiropractic assessment evaluates joint and muscle range of motion, body posture and alignment, joint stability, and proprioception. Identifying and addressing deficits in these areas of nerve, muscle, and joint function can help to prevent injury and improve athletic performance.

Other factors addressed in an overall treatment plan include evaluating and providing feedback on current warm-up and strength and conditioning practices used by the patient. Nutrition is another area that can also be addressed to help with performance and recovery from exercise.
