Beating the End of Summer Blues

The end of summer can be a bittersweet time for many of us. As the warm, leisurely days give way to cooler temperatures and the return of routine, it’s common to experience a sense of sadness or anxiety, often referred to as the “end-of-summer blues.” But while this feeling is normal, there are ways to work through it and embrace the change of season with a positive outlook.

At Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic, we understand the importance of maintaining both physical and mental well-being throughout the year. We’ve been helping patients in Ancaster and the Greater Hamilton area for more than 20 years, and for many, navigating seasonal transitions can be challenging. Read on for strategies to manage and beat the end-of-summer blues.

Understanding the End-of-Summer Blues

First, it’s important to note that the end-of-summer blues are not the same as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). While both involve a change in mood related to the seasons, SAD is a clinical diagnosis characterised by significant depressive symptoms that persist throughout a particular season, usually winter.

Compare that with the end-of-summer blues – a temporary feeling of sadness or disappointment as summer comes to a close. These feelings are often triggered by factors such as:

  • The impending return to a more structured routine, with less leisure time
  • A realization that long-anticipated summer plans or goals weren’t fully achieved
  • A sense of nostalgia for the carefree days of summer, especially those from childhood
  • The awareness of the passage of time and the changing of seasons

Strategies to Overcome the End-of-Summer Blues

While it’s normal to feel a bit down as summer ends, there are several ways to help yourself move past these feelings and embrace the new season:

  1. Celebrate your summer memories: Take time to reflect on the positive experiences and accomplishments of the summer. Create a photo album, journal your favourite moments, or share stories with friends and family. This helps you appreciate the season and carries the good feelings into the months ahead.
  2. Create an end-of-summer ritual: Mark the transition with a meaningful tradition such as a final summer outing, a seasonal feast, or a symbolic “goodbye” to summer. Rituals help provide a sense of closure and prepare you mentally for the change.
  3. Acknowledge and address your feelings: Don’t ignore or suppress your emotions. Instead, take time to identify and validate them. Write down your thoughts, talk to a trusted friend, or engage in a relaxing activity that allows you to process your feelings in a healthy way.
  4. Embrace a new hobby or activity: Look forward to the unique opportunities that a new season brings. Take up a new hobby, join a class or club, or plan outings that celebrate autumn’s beauty. Having something to look forward to can shift your focus and create a sense of excitement.
  5. Practice self-care: Prioritise activities that promote physical and mental well-being, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and stress-management techniques. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help you feel your best and boost your resilience during times of change. Check out our blog on this very topic – Prioritize Self Care.

The team at Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic is here to support you in your wellness journey throughout every season. If you find yourself struggling with the end-of-summer blues or any other emotional challenges, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. While our focus continues to be your musculoskeletal health, we have an established network of contacts and resources that we can suggest to help you achieve and maintain your optimal level of health. Remember, change is a natural part of life, and each season brings its own unique beauty and opportunities. By embracing the present and focusing on the good things to come, you can successfully navigate the end-of-summer blues and step into autumn with confidence and optimism.

Backpacks to Desks: Back to School Health Basics

As summer winds down, we’re guessing many parents and students are thinking about what needs to happen to get ready for the new school year. It can be an exciting time but also a bit daunting.

At Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic, we understand the importance of promoting healthy habits from a young age. As healthcare providers, we have been helping patients and families in the Ancaster and Greater Hamilton area for 20+ years. Read on for tips on how to choose the right backpack and create an ergonomically sound study space – two important ways to ensure your students’ comfort and safety, and set them up for success.

Why Choosing the Right Backpack is Important

Backpacks are a staple of school life, but did you know that an ill-fitting or overloaded backpack can lead to back pain, neck strain, and other musculoskeletal issues? To help prevent these problems, consider the following when selecting a backpack:

  1. Size: The backpack should be proportionate to the student’s body size and not extend below the lower back.
  2. Padding: Look for wide, padded shoulder straps and a cushioned back panel to reduce pressure and distribute weight evenly. A backpack with thin straps may not prevent weight from digging into the shoulders, causing circulation problems in the area.
  3. Multiple compartments: A bag with separate compartments helps distribute weight more evenly and keeps contents organized. Pack heavier items close to the body and in the middle of the backpack.
  4. Waist and chest straps: These help stabilize the pack and reduce strain on the shoulders and back.

Remember, a backpack should never weigh more than 10-15% of the user’s body weight. Encourage students to use both shoulder straps and pack only essential items to minimize the load.

Setting Up an Ergonomic Desk Space

With the increasing use of technology as a tool for learning, it’s important to create an ergonomic desk setup that promotes good posture and reduces the risk of neck, back, and eye strain.

Here are some tips:

  1. Chair: choose one that allows your student’s feet to rest flat on the floor and provides support for the lower back.
  2. Desk:a desk should be at a height that allows the student’s elbows to rest comfortably at a 90-degree angle when typing.
  3. Monitor: the top of the monitor should be at or slightly below eye level, and about an arm’s length away. Ideally, the monitor is set at a height enabling the user’s neck to be straight and not tilted upwards or downwards, helping to prevent neck strain and discomfort.
  4. Lighting: Ensure adequate lighting to reduce eye strain, and position the monitor to minimize glare.
  5. Breaks: Encourage students to take regular breaks so they can stretch, move around, and rest their eyes.

By creating an ergonomically sound study space, you can help develop good posture habits and reduce the risk of discomfort and strain associated with prolonged sitting and computer use.

Promoting Overall Health and Well-Being

In addition to choosing the right backpack and setting up an ergonomic desk, other steps parents and caregivers can take to support their students’ well-being and positive overall health include:

  • Encourage participation in regular physical activity
  • Ensure students to get enough sleep each night
  • Provide a balanced, nutritious diet to fuel their growing bodies and minds
  • Promote stress management techniques such as deep breathing or mindfulness, to help them manage the pressure of academics and simply being a student

The Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness team is here to help. If you or your student experiences discomfort or pain related to backpack use, desk ergonomics, or have any other health-related questions or concerns, contact our team.

As the new school year begins, remember that small changes can make a big difference. Promoting overall healthy habits starts young and can help set your student up for a lifetime of positive well-being and success, both in and out of the classroom.

Why Helping Others is Good for your Health

We are often told to prioritize self-care and personal well-being, so  it might come as a surprise that one of the most powerful ways to improve your health is by helping others. A growing body of research suggests that acts of kindness and generosity not only benefit the recipient but also have a profound impact on the giver’s physical and mental health.

For over 20 years, Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic, has helped patients in Ancaster and the Greater Hamilton area achieve optimal health and well-being. While our focus remains musculoskeletal care and treatment, we also recognize that your overall health consists of  social, psychological, and environmental factors. Learn how engaging in altruistic behaviour is not only rewarding but also provides numerous health benefits.

The Science Behind the Kindness-Health Connection

Numerous studies have demonstrated the link between helping others and improved health outcomes. For example, research published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine found that giving support to family and friends, as well as formal volunteering, is associated with lower levels of interleukin 6, a marker of inflammation. Chronic inflammation has been linked to various serious health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer.

Another study conducted by researchers at the University of British Columbia found that older adults with high blood pressure who spent money on others, experienced a significant decrease in blood pressure, comparable to the effects of starting an exercise routine or adopting a healthier diet.

But the benefits don’t stop there. Helping others has also been shown to:

  • Increase longevity
  • Reduce stress and improve mental well-being
  • Activate the brain’s reward centres, leading to increased happiness
  • Provide a sense of meaning and purpose in life

Strike a Balance

While the evidence supporting the health benefits of helping others is compelling, it’s important to balance caring for others with taking care of yourself. Overextending yourself or neglecting your own needs can lead to burnout and negative health consequences.

The key is to find ways to help others that align with your interests, skills, and available time. This could be volunteering for a cause you’re passionate about; offering support to a friend or family member in need; or simply performing random acts of kindness throughout your day.

It’s also crucial to set boundaries and learn to say no when necessary. Remember, the goal is to experience the positive effects of helping others without sacrificing your own well-being.

Incorporate Kindness into Your Life

At Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic, we encourage our patients to explore ways to incorporate acts of kindness and generosity into their daily lives. Some ideas include:

  • Volunteering at a local charity or community organization
  • Offering to help a neighbour with household chores or errands
  • Donating to a cause you believe in
  • Providing emotional support to a friend or family member going through a difficult time
  • Performing random acts of kindness, such as buying coffee for the person behind you in line or leaving a kind note for a coworker

By making a conscious effort to help others, you not only make a positive impact on their lives but also reap the numerous health benefits associated with altruistic behaviour.

In a world that appears tough at times, remember that sometimes the best way to help yourself is by helping others. Embrace the power of kindness and watch as it transforms not only your own life but also the lives of those around you.

Celebrating the Civic Holiday: Nurturing Community Well-Being

The first Monday of August marks a significant occasion for Canadians – Civic Holiday. This holiday, known by various names such as Terry Fox Day, British Columbia Day, Saskatchewan Day, or Simcoe Day, depending on the province, is often viewed as a much-needed break from work and an opportunity to enjoy the final weeks of summer. However, it also presents an excellent chance to focus on our health and well-being. By taking part in local festivals, seasonal events, and exploring regional parks and trails, we can use this day to relax, discover new experiences, and recharge our minds and bodies.

At Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic, we understand the role of community, and know that fostering  a sense of belonging and connection, promotes overall health and happiness. In Ontario, we are fortunate to have long weekends throughout the summer. As the Civic long weekend approaches, it’s the perfect occasion to celebrate our shared identity as Canadians while taking steps to improve our physical, mental, and social well-being.

Building Community Connections

One of the most significant benefits of Civic Holiday is the chance to connect with our neighbours, friends, and family. Many communities organize events such as parades, picnics, or festivals, bringing residents together to celebrate and socialize. Participating in these events can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, which have been linked to various health issues, including depression, anxiety, and even physical ailments.

In an earlier blog, we highlighted how strong social connections are crucial for maintaining good health and longevity. Take advantage of local community activities and the long weekend during the Civic Holiday to gather with friends and family. This can help strengthen your social network and foster a sense of belonging – two factors that can positively affect our well-being.

Embracing Outdoor Activities

Civic Holiday falls during a beautiful time of year with warm weather and long daylight hours. It’s a perfect time to head outside and take advantage of the many benefits of outdoor activity. Be sure to protect yourself from the sun’s intense rays by keeping these tips in mind to keep you and your family sun-safe.

Whether it’s joining a community sports tournament, going for a hike with friends, or simply enjoying a picnic in the park, spending time in nature and being physically active can have numerous benefits, such as:

  • Reducing stress and anxiety
  • Improving mood and self-esteem
  • Boosting cardiovascular health
  • Strengthening muscles and bones
  • Enhancing cognitive function

We are fortunate to live in a region with an abundance of nature and facilities promoting physical activity and fun. Take advantage of them over the long weekend. Whether you hike, cycle, or swim, our community boasts numerous trails, parks, and beaches to enjoy.

Spending time outdoors supports positive lifestyle changes. Make it a group or family activity, and now you’re also encouraging and promoting social connections .

Taking a Break from Daily Stress

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind of work and responsibilities. Civic Holiday provides a much-needed break from the stress and pressure of our everyday lives, allowing us to recharge and refocus on what matters most.

Taking time off to relax, unwind, and engage in activities we enjoy can have significant benefits for our mental health and overall well-being. By reducing stress and promoting relaxation, we strengthen our ability to cope with life’s challenges.

A study of 70,000 women found that those with high optimism scores had a 38% lower risk of heart disease and a 39% lower risk for stroke, demonstrating how positive community engagement can significantly benefit health.

Celebrating Civic Holiday at Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic

At Alliance Chiropractic, we hope our patients take time to nurture their health and well-being. Whether it’s participating in community events, spending time outdoors, or simply taking a break from daily stressors, we hope you find ways to support your physical, mental, and social health this long weekend.

Go Team Canada! How Live Sports can Positively Impact Well-Being

As excitement around the world builds for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, we are sure to see incredible displays of athleticism and sportsmanship. But did you know that watching live sports events can also have a significant positive impact on your mental health and overall well-being? Research shows that watching professional, elite, or amateur sports,  whether in person or on screen, can contribute to increased happiness, a sense of belonging, and improved brain function.

Active vs. Passive Sports Engagement

We know that participating in physical activity, active sports engagement, provides numerous benefits. However, research also shows that watching sports, also known as passive sports engagement, is good for you too.

A recent study published in the journal Sport Management Review cited three subset studies involving Japanese participants:

  1. Analyzing data from 20,000 participants, the first study found that regularly watching sports contributed to higher reported well-being.
  2. Over 200 Japanese residents were recruited for the second study, and reported higher levels of well-being after watching sports videos – especially videos of popular sports such as baseball.
  3. The third study used MRI scans to evaluate changes in brain function and structure and found:
    1. Watching sports not only triggered feel-good emotions like happiness and pleasure but also;
    2. Those who regularly watched sports showed higher gray matter volume in areas associated with reward and pleasure.

These findings suggest that keeping up with sports can provide an immediate mood boost and also have positive long-term effects on brain structure.

Incorporate Sports into Your Well-Being Routine

If you enjoy sports, make watching live sports events – whether in person or on screen – a regular part of your well-being routine. Invite friends or family to join you, and use sports as an opportunity to strengthen social bonds and foster a sense of community.

Start them Young

If you have young children, consider registering them for sporting activities. Individual and team sports not only offer children fantastic learning opportunities but are also a great way for parents to meet others and form new friendships.

Moderation is Key

Of course, watching sports is just one of many ways to support mental well-being. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, quality sleep, and strong social connections are all necessary and important components that also help promote good health and wellness.

Make it Social

Consider watching sports as a group activity. Gathering with friends and family to watch a game can foster a sense of belonging and social connection, both of which are well known factors supporting positive mental health and longevity.

Why Wait? Now is the Perfect Time to Start

The Olympics are a fantastic time to cheer on the home team and benefit from all that passive sports engagement can provide. Held every two years and alternating between winter and summer sports, the Olympics are a source of pride and excitement for countries around the world.  However, if the games are not your thing, choose from a variety of other sporting activities: from the local pitch to varsity courts to regional tracks and beaches, there is something for everyone.

A Final Word

At Alliance Chiropractic, we recognize the importance of physical, mental, social, and environmental factors contributing to your overall quality of life. While our focus is primarily on treating and managing neuromusculoskeletal conditions, we are always on the lookout for information and resources that support and promote all aspects of wellness.

Helping patients and families in Ancaster and the greater Hamilton area for more than 20 years, we are here to help. Contact us if you have any questions related to this blog or any other health concern.

Prioritizing Self-Care: Why it’s Important for Your Mental Health

Our world can be fast-paced and demanding – it’s easy to neglect our own needs and bump self-care to the bottom of our priority list. However, as we approach International Self-Care Day on July 24, 2024, let’s take some time to recognize the vital role self-care plays in maintaining our mental health and overall well-being.

At Alliance Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic, we understand that true wellness goes beyond physical health and includes mental, social, and environmental components as well. Making self-care a daily habit supports your mental health and can help you live a more fulfilling life.

Understanding why Self-Care is Important

Before we dive into the benefits of self-care, let’s first establish what it means. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.”

In other words, self-care is the practice of individuals looking after their own health using the knowledge and information available to them. It is a decision-making process that allows individuals to take control of their own health efficiently, conveniently, and collaboratively with  health and social care professionals as needed.

Self-care is more than just a buzzword – it’s a fundamental aspect of maintaining your mental health. When you choose self-care, you’re making the conscious decision to prioritize yourself and your well-being.

Research has shown that practicing self-care can lead to:

  • Increased self-esteem and self-worth
  • Reduced stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Enhanced resilience and coping skills
  • Improved relationships and social connections
  • Greater overall life satisfaction

By taking care of yourself, you’re investing in your own health and happiness and also helping to ensure you are the best you can be for your family, friends, and colleagues.

The Four Pillars of Self-Care

To practice effective self-care, let’s take a look at the four main pillars and how they contribute to our overall well-being:

  1. Physical Self-Care: Nourish your body with healthy foods, engage in regular physical activity, prioritize quality sleep, and stay hydrated.
  2. Mental Self-Care: Engage in activities that stimulate your mind, such as reading, learning new skills, or solving puzzles. Practice mindfulness and self-reflection.
  3. Emotional Self-Care: Acknowledge and express your feelings in healthy ways. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people and set healthy boundaries.
  4. Spiritual Self-Care: Connect with your inner self through practices like meditation, prayer, or spending time in nature. Find purpose and meaning in your life.

Nurturing each of these areas helps you create a strong foundation for optimal mental health and well-being.

Making Self-Care a Daily Habit

Incorporating self-care into your daily routine doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Start small and gradually build up your self-care practice. Here are some simple ways to make self-care a habit:

  • Take brief breaks throughout the day to stretch, breathe deeply, or practice mindfulness
  • Set aside dedicated “me time” daily, even if it’s just 15-30 minutes
  • Engage in hobbies or activities that bring you joy and relaxation
  • Practise self-compassion and positive self-talk
  • Seek support from loved ones or professionals when needed

Remember, self-care isn’t selfish – it’s necessary for maintaining your mental health and being the best version of yourself.

Celebrating International Self-Care Day

This July 24, 2024 on International Self-Care Day, take an opportunity to reflect on your current self-care practices and identify areas where you can improve. Here are some examples of how to share your self-care journey with others and encourage them to prioritize their own well-being:

  • Lead by example: Consistently practice self-care in your own life and share your experiences with others. When they see the positive impact it has on you, they may be inspired to do the same.
  • Start a conversation: Openly discuss the importance of self-care with friends, family, or colleagues. Share what works for you and ask them about their own self-care practices.
  • Recommend resources: Share books, articles, podcasts, or apps that have helped you on your self-care journey. This can provide others with valuable tools and information to get started.
  • Offer support: Let your loved ones know that you’re there to support them in their self-care efforts. Offer to be an accountability partner, checking in on each other’s progress and providing encouragement along the way.
  • Organize a self-care activity: Plan a group activity that focuses on self-care, such as a yoga class, meditation session, or nature walk. This can help foster a sense of community and make self-care feel more accessible and enjoyable.

Self-care is important – ensure you build ways to support your health and well-being as much as possible. By making self-care a daily priority, you are promoting ways to feel your best and be on your way to living a more vibrant and fulfilling life.

Summer is the perfect time to learn about the incredible benefits of hiking. From boosting your heart health to reducing stress and anxiety, walking in nature can have a profound impact on your mind and body. Let’s explore how.

The Health Benefits of Hiking

Hiking gives your body a full-body workout. With every step, you engage your leg muscles, core, and even your arms (especially if you use trekking poles for steeper climbs and descents). Walking is gentle on your joints while still providing a challenging cardiovascular workout.

But the benefits don’t stop there. Hiking can also:

  • Improve your balance and stability
  • Strengthen your bones
  • Help you maintain a healthy weight
  • Boost your immune system

And the best part? You don’t have to be an experienced hiker to reap these rewards. Even a leisurely walk on a local trail can do wonders for your overall health.

The Mental Magic of Nature

Have you ever noticed how a walk in the woods can instantly lift your mood? There’s a scientific reason behind that feeling. Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while increasing feelings of happiness and well-being.

When you hike, you give yourself a chance to unplug from technology and reconnect with the natural world. If you hike with others, it also provides the opportunity for uninterrupted social connection. The sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors can also be incredibly soothing, helping you to relax and de-stress.

Plus, hiking helps:

  • Improve your focus and concentration
  • Boost your creativity and problem-solving skills
  • Increase your self-esteem and confidence
  • Help you sleep better at night

So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed out, lace up and hit the trails. You might be surprised at how much better you feel afterwards.

A Multitude of Health Benefits

Everyone can benefit from spending more time in nature. In addition to the physical and mental health benefits mentioned, hiking trails offer a wide range of advantages for both individuals and their communities.

Social Health Benefit of Hiking

Trails promote connectivity, and we’re not talking digital. Walking with friends, neighbours, and family can strengthen social bonds. It can also foster a sense of pride and cohesion within communities, as residents come together to enjoy and maintain these shared spaces.

Economically Speaking

Protecting and maintaining trails attract tourism, benefiting local businesses such as restaurants, retail stores, and accommodations. Property values have also been shown to increase in proximity to trails, as they are recognized as safe, healthy, and community-oriented spaces.

Opportunities for Learning

Hiking trails also provide unique educational opportunities, allowing users to learn about local nature, culture, and history through hands-on experiences. They also support environmental awareness and promote respect for the natural world, serving as valuable tools for research and conservation efforts.

Multipurpose Usage

Trails support a range of recreational activities beyond hiking, such as running, cross-country, cycling, skiing, and snowshoeing. They encourage responsible outdoor recreation, fitness, and instill a respect for nature and green spaces.

Environmental Considerations

Lastly, our trails can play a role in preventing pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by providing options that do not include motorized vehicles. By facilitating modes of active transportation (think walking, cycling, and rollerblading, etc.), individuals not only get to experience the health benefits of hiking, but also know that they are supporting sustainable transportation and helping the planet.

Get Started Today!

If you’re new to hiking, start small by exploring local trails and gradually work your way up to longer, more challenging hikes as your fitness level improves. Injury Prevention: A Key Factor for Healthy Living

Did you know that injuries are the leading cause of death in Canada among those between one to 44 years of age? Or that injuries cost our economy a staggering $29.4 billion annually? As National Injury Prevention Day approaches on July 5, it’s the perfect time to take a closer look at how we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from preventable injuries.

At Alliance Chiropractic, we believe that preventing disease and injury is the best way to support healthy living. While it may not be possible to eliminate every risk, prioritizing safety can be relatively simple. By incorporating a few key strategies into your daily life, you can significantly reduce your chances of experiencing an injury at work, home, or play.

Awareness: Your First Line of Defense

Staying alert and mindful of your surroundings is the foundation of effective injury prevention. By identifying potential hazards before they lead to accidents, you can keep yourself and others safe. A whopping 75 percent of injury-related deaths are from unintentional causes, such as falls, car crashes, and poisonings.

Easy Injury Prevention Tips

Ready to take control of your safety? No matter how old you are, here are some practical tips to help you minimize your risk of injury:

  • Always warm up and cool down before physical activity
  • Learn proper techniques for lifting, shoveling snow, and other demanding tasks
  • Listen to your body and pay attention to pain and fatigue
  • Wear appropriate gear and footwear for support and protection

Make Safety a Part of Your Daily Routine

Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or just starting an exercise routine, it’s crucial to prioritize safety. Vary your workouts to avoid repetitive strain injuries, and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your sessions. Don’t forget to use protective gear like helmets, pads, and guards when engaging in sports or other physical activities.

Create a Safer Work Environment

Many of us spend a significant portion of our day seated either at work or school – make ergonomics a key factor in injury prevention. Take the time to adjust your work and study space to minimize strain on your back, neck, and shoulders. Remember to take frequent breaks to stand, stretch, and avoid prolonged seated positions.

Why Safety at Home Matters

Your home should be a place where you feel secure and protected. By identifying and addressing potential hazards, you can minimize the risk of falls, poisonings, and other accidents. There are plenty of resources available to help you create a safer home environment for you and your family, including a list at the bottom of this blog..

The Shocking Reality of Preventable Injuries

Every day, 48 Canadians die, and 634 are hospitalized because of injuries. Preventable injury kills more Canadian children than any disease and more youth than all other causes combined. Falls alone are the leading cause of injury deaths, hospitalizations, emergency department visits, and disabilities in Canada.

Digital Dangers: How Screens and Digital Devices Impact Memory

Impact of Excessive Screen Time on Cognitive Performance

Now that school is out, many parents will worry about their children and the time they spend in front of screens or on devices. And rightly so! The term ‘digital dementia’ is often used to describe the impact of prolonged use of devices on cognitive performance, and it is a growing concern among parents and medical professionals.

The Good, Bad, and the Ugly on Technology

While devices have revolutionized the way we communicate, work, and entertain ourselves, there is a growing body of research showing that prolonged and early age use can negatively impact brain function and behavior.

The constant multitasking, rapid information processing, and onslaught of distractions device use can lead to decreased attention span, memory problems, and difficulty with cognitive functions. Over time, this can impact behavior by causing increased anxiety, stress, and dependence on digital devices for daily activities and function. We are also learning that prolonged exposure to screens during childhood can hinder brain development, leading to disease and long-term problems during adulthood. Specifically, it’s believed that prolonged childhood exposure interferes with language acquisition, the development of executive functioning, and healthy brain development, contributing to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia later in life

Screens Aside, Why Movement Matters

Mechanically, we also know that excessive screen time can lead to a range of physical problems such as slumping, text neck, chronic pain, and weight gain related to inactivity. We recently highlighted some of these in our clinic newsletter. Regardless of age, spending long hours on devices or in front of a screen has serious consequences. The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology has created 24 hour movement guidelines by age – find them here.

Technology’s Impact on Attention Span, Memory, and Concentration

The rapid advancement of technology has had a profound impact on many aspects of mental activity such as attention span, memory, and concentration. It’s believed that this is likely due to cognitive overload from constant overstimulation – just think of the volumes of data, stimuli, and information the human brain tries to receive, process, and retain when scrolling, reading, and interacting with pictures, text, and videos on a device. It’s a different way of consuming and understanding information, and we’re only now learning how retaining information viewed on a device is a different process than traditional linear reading.

Is More Screen Time Causing Loneliness?

Researchers are also seeing how society’s growing reliance on devices could be contributing to increased reports of loneliness and social isolation. As we automate daily tasks and increase our online interactions, we reduce the opportunity for face-to-face interactions and it’s not always healthy. In fact, earlier this year, San Mateo, California became the first US county to declare loneliness a public health emergency.

Reducing your Child’s Risk of Digital Disease

So what can parents do? It’s essential to balance screen time with offline activities. Let’s take a look at some ways to promote brain health and minimize the risks of potential negative effects related to your child’s technology use.

1. Be aware of your family’s device use and screen time

Monitor how long you and your children are on devices or in front of screens. Also be aware of the type of content your child is accessing, and ensure it is age appropriate.

2. Set realistic limits on screen time

Setting realistic limits on screen time is crucial for your child’s development. Doing so can help promote face-to-face interactions, facilitate language development skills, and support increased physical activity. In addition to setting time restrictions, parents can also establish tech-free zones, and encourage non-digital activities such as board games, reading, or playing outside. Modeling healthy screen habits is also important so be aware of your own device usage.

The Canadian Paediatric Society and Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology recommend the following daily screen limits:

  • Children aged two and under: no screen time.
  • Children aged two to four: less than one hour a day of screen time.
  • Children and teens aged five to 17: maximum of two hours a day of recreational screen time

3. Get physical

Daily physical activity is essential for physical and mental health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily. Moving your body can reduce stress, boost energy, and help keep you off your device. Find activities that you and your children can enjoy together and incorporate them into daily routine. This could include going for a bike ride, playing at a park, or simply walking around the neighbourhood.
